Established as the Recovered Materials Foundation by the Christchurch City Council, TerraNova is a non-profit organisation that actively promotes recycling, reuse and resource recovery.

TerraNova assists other enterprises that are also in the field of resource recovery and advices on recycling policies on the regional and national levels. They also provide valuable research for the industry, constantly looking for better ways to reuse and recycle.

In June 2005, TerraNova established MetaNZ. MetaNZ's purpose was to take control of 3 EcoDepots (known then as refuse stations) and changed them from stations to collect refuse to fully functioning facilities to actively recover resources for future use.
