Better Than A Silver Lining
Recycled custom wood helped Lynn Young and her family save money, heat, and peace and quiet. By lining their garage with the wood, Lynn’s children now have a relaxation area that is not only warm, but is virtually soundproof.

When Lynn first discovered Waste Exchange she was looking for something different altogether. She had heard about SuperShed (where reused goods can be purchased) and decided to look up recycling on the internet to find out more it. The discovery of Waste Exchange seemed an ideal way to source wood for her husband’s woodworking hobby. “We saw an advert for pallet boxes” says Lynn, “but as soon as we saw them we realised the thick MDF wood wasn’t what we were looking for. But we had also just bought a house, and the garage had only the framework on the inside walls, and thin board outside. We asked the company giving it away if the wood could be used to line the garage instead. They said yes, so that is what we did.” |

Using the wood to line the garage couldn’t have worked out better for Lynn and her family. “Having just bought the house we didn’t really have extra money to spend on the garage. The kids wanted to make this space into a den for themselves. This wood is quite thick and insulates very well, keeping the place warmer, and it soundproofs it as well.” Lynn was able to collect all the wood she needed in one go, and over the course of 2005 her son and husband managed to fit lining the garage walls around their busy schedules. The ceiling is the next project. They have also kept some of the board aside to use in the workshop. “It’s quite thick so it can be used as a workbench, as well as to line the walls” says Lynn. |
